Southwark Council has set-up one of the first Mental Health Social Care Services nationwide. Running since December 2016, the service offers assessment and support to adults whose mental illness restricts their activities of daily living.
Our focus is to maximise an adult’s independence so that they are at the centre of decision-making, and become capable and confi dent with the tasks which were once unachievable. We work closely with primary care, secondary mental health services and our third sector providers to maximise the opportunities available to support this.
Working with the Social Workers and Assistant Practitioners in the teams, the occupational therapists will gain experience of assessing within the Care Act, and framing the specialism that occupational therapists bring in Recovering Ordinary Lives.
Occupational therapists will help to design personalised support plans, coaching and supporting the adult to build optimism about successful independence, and bring our skills in activity analysis and adaptation.
