The Challenge
Derek was a palliative patient admitted to the ward for symptom control. His admission was meant to be short but he struggled with overwhelming fatigue. I identified that the ward routine and many staff visits were compounding Derek's fatigue.
The Change
We discussed his daily routine at home to analyse what was beneficial to his mood and energy. I introduced a laminated timetable and added the tasks and nap times that Derek does at home. I advised the team to support Derek using his timetable.
The Impact
This fatigue management strategy was successful in helping Derek understand himself and his fatigue. He was able to focus on things that were important and prioritise things that gave him energy. Derek's well being improved and he was discharged.
