The Challenge
An inpatient and his wife were struggling with his very recent diagnosis and his rapid decline. She was struggling to know how to help him. He explained that his sudden change in physical appearance was troubling him and he wished to access a bath.
The Change
The bath on the ward was broken so I negotiated the use of a bath in another department. I supported his wife to transfer him using the hoist and then left them alone for some quality time in which she helped bathe him and they could talk privately.
The Impact
The patient was visibly happier and more relaxed after his bath. He was happier with his physical appearance and had enjoyed some privacy with his wife. His wife enjoyed the chance to 'care' for her husband and felt more orientated to this new role.
