RCOT Specialist Section - Work
Supporting people to remain in, return to, or obtain work is a key function of occupational therapy.
We passionately believe that occupational therapists have a major role to play in this exciting and multi-faceted enterprise. We work with other organisations in order to foster good relationships and champion our unique contribution as occupational therapists.
Our Specialist Section includes members from both private and statutory sectors and encompasses practitioners from mental health, learning disability and physical settings.

Fit notes
Fit Note training Session 1 (17 April 2024)
Specialist Section – Work hosted the first of a series of Fit note training sessions on 17 April. The aim of this session was to encourage more OTs to complete Fit notes as part of their day to day practice.
The session highlighted the difference between an AHP Health and Work Report and the Med3 fit note. Delegates were signposted to available training and resources and case studies were studied where multiple fit notes have been used to facilitate successful phased return to work.
Our discussions at the end of the session raised queries about competency frameworks and potential mentors who would be able to assess competence of OTs. It was clear that all organisations would require a Standard Operating Policy and that some already had this in place.

There were multiple delegates who requested that established Standard Operating Policies and competency frameworks be shared with the group. We have requested that any available examples are shared with us – please send these to rcotsswork@gmail.com. These will be discussed at the second session on 22 May.
The second session in our series will support managers of OT services to confidently incorporate Fit Notes into NHS clinical practice. We will also be joined by Beccy Macnamara from the Digital Partnering team at NHS England. She will be talking about the implementation of the eMed3.
This session will also be recorded and available here soon after the event.
