Equity, diversity and belonging
Equity, diversity and belonging
We put equity, diversity and belonging at the heart of everything we do. We actively oppose discrimination, demonstrate effective allyship and are transparent and accountable.
We work with members, volunteers, learners, staff, partners, stakeholders and the wider profession to create a sense of belonging to the diverse, authentic and empowering culture we are building together. Our work supports the wellbeing of people accessing occupational therapy and contributes to health equity for all.
We aim to lead the profession by adopting and advocating for cultures which value, respect and celebrates diversity and challenge inequality and discrimination.
‘For us, equity, diversity and belonging aren’t optional extras that only affect certain people. These issues affect everyone, both within and beyond our profession – and we are all responsible.’ Odeth Richardson, Chair of Council
We recognise that each of us is unique and therefore our definition of diversity will go beyond those defined in equality legislation. We will afford the same standards and principles to those with lived experiences.
‘Our EDB Strategy will guide us on our journey to creating a culture of authenticity and belonging, where everyone is welcomed, celebrated, supported, recognised and valued. Where everyone feels they belong as their true and authentic selves.’ Steve Ford, Chief Executive (2021 - 2025)
EDB Networks on RCOT Communities
Together we are building a stronger and more inclusive profession where equality, representation and a genuine sense of belonging are central to who we are. This space supports our members as a community and recognises that diversity in practice strengthens our ability to meet the needs of those who engage with occupational therapy services.
We champion a profession where everyone feels welcomed, celebrated, supported, recognised and valued. Our Equity, Diversity and Belonging Strategy 2024–2027 reflects this commitment and acknowledges that many voices have historically been under-recognised in shaping our profession. This includes racially and ethnically minoritised members, disabled and neurodivergent practitioners, LGBTQIA+ communities, carers and people of diverse faith and spiritual backgrounds. Inclusion means more than presence. It means being heard, respected and genuinely valued.
These EDB networks are part of changing that. They provide a safe, supportive and empowering space where members can connect, share experiences and contribute to positive change across practice, education, leadership and professional development.
Currently there are 5 EDB Networks:
- B.A.M.E
- LGBTQIA+
- Disability and Neurodivergent
- Carers
- Inter-Faith
Members can also explore and join the EDB Networks on RCOT Communities. These networks are open to everyone, including those who identify with these communities, allies who want to learn and support others, and anyone who is curious and wants to better understand the experiences of colleagues.
Guided by the principles of respect, confidentiality and privacy, we ask all members to uphold these values to ensure this remains a safe and inclusive community for everyone.
