2025 Elizabeth Casson Memorial Lecture

We’re excited to introduce Dr Charlie Chung as the speaker for our 2025 Elizabeth Casson Memorial Lecture.

With over 34 years of expertise, Charlie is an internationally renowned occupational therapist, leader, researcher and educator.

Recipient of a Merit Award in 2024 for his unstinting support of occupational therapists working in stroke and rehabilitation teams across the UK, and the application of his research into clinical practice.

Dr Chung is currently Lothian AHP Stroke Strategic Lead, Consultant Occupational Therapist and long COVID clinical pathway lead with NHS Lothian. He was a national committee member and later Chair of our Specialist Section: Neurological Practice Stroke Forum and is an Honourary Fellow of Queen Margaret University.

He's recently been recruited to the Elizabeth Casson Trust.

In addition to working with stroke survivors towards their occupational goals, Charlie has a passion for delivering training to equip other clinicians with the knowledge and skills to offer cognitive rehabilitation to their service users. He has delivered executive function and cognitive rehabilitation workshops across the UK, Canada and Australia.

The lecture is a memorial to Elizabeth Casson (1881–1954) in honour of her contributions to the profession of occupational therapy. The first woman to be awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Bristol in 1929, Elizabeth Casson specialised in psychiatry and introduced occupational therapy to England, setting up the first school of occupational therapy, Dorset House, in Bristol.

We award the lectureship to an RCOT member whose peers consider them to have made and be making a significant contribution to the profession’s development.

It is open to members and non-members and encourage you to invite friends and those interested in occupational therapy.

• What devices can be used? You can use your mobile phone, computer, or laptop to view the lecture and can use multiple devices to watch the stream. 
• What is the timing of the lecture? The Lecture event will take place from 6:30pm and will last approximately 90 minutes on Wednesday 30 April 2025. This includes introductions and closing. You can log in any time before the Lecture starts.  
• Will the lecture be recorded? We will send the recording to all those who had a ticket. If you can't attend, book your space anyway to have the recording straight to your inbox once available.
• Why was Dr Charlie Chung chosen to present the lecture? He was nominated by Thérèse Lebedis and chosen by our Council. On making their choice, they said: ‘Council were very impressed with the outstanding field of nominations – as only eminent members of the profession are put forward for our Elizabeth Casson Memorial Lecture. We really value the perspectives and expertise of all the nominees, however, only one person can be selected each year.’
• How do I record this as part of my CPD? 
  • If you’re an RCOT member attending live – and you signed up using the same email address as your RCOT membership – you’ll see a CPD diary entry in your CPD portfolio shortly after the lecture has finished. You’ll be able to complete the diary entry by adding your personal learning and reflections from this lecture whenever suits you best.
