Supporting safe spaces for occupational therapists

We're calling for respect and protection for all staff

Responding to news that some NHS staff feel unable to go to certain areas in their community for home visits because of St. George's flags being on display, Satvinder Reyatt, our Chief Executive (interim), said:

‘Occupational therapists work across health and social care to enable people to live their lives to the fullest. They often visit individuals in their own homes, supporting them to do the everyday activities that matter most - from cooking a meal to caring for loved ones. This work is about enabling independence and dignity, and it relies on trust and safety.

‘No health professional should feel intimidated while providing care. We stand with all occupational therapist practitioners, and colleagues across health and social care, in calling for respect and protection for all staff. We urge everyone to play their part in creating safe spaces for those who care for us.

‘We have held reflection sessions for members so they can come together and share their thoughts, including one about Flags and Protests. We will continue to offer these over the next year when appropriate. In the short term, if any of our members are affected or need advice, please contact our Professional Advisory Service for confidential support.’
