‘Benefits are more than just financial support’ - comment on welfare reform

11 March, 2025 Press release 3 minute read

Commenting on the UK government’s planned welfare reform green paper, UK Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Joseph Brunwin, said:

‘Benefits like PIP and Universal Credit are more than just financial support: they help people manage their health, stay independent, and engage in daily life.

‘Occupations such as cooking, showering, going to the toilet, keeping in touch with friends, or looking after family are all essential for wellbeing. Tightening the eligibility requirements for PIP could prevent people from carrying out these and other essential activities of daily living, including work, while increasing pressure on the NHS and social care services. They may even make it harder for people to find and keep jobs that are suitable for them.

‘Any changes to benefits should support – not disadvantage – those with disabilities or long-term conditions. Policymakers need to recognise how these benefits help people stay independent and actively take part in society. Reforms also need to acknowledge that employers need more support to employ, retain and support disabled employees.

‘Occupational therapists can provide expert insights on how the right support improves wellbeing, promotes inclusion, and helps people contribute to their communities and workplaces. They provide practical help and strategies to overcome challenges, manage health conditions, and stay in work that’s right for them.

‘We’re committed to working with the government to create policies that improve job opportunities while protecting the financial support people need to live independently and thrive.’
