On Tuesday 27 September 2022 we’re welcoming Simone Welch, Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist in Stroke, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, to speak to us and the occupational therapy community.
This EBD insight session will explore the impact of an Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) incident reporting workshop that was developed in response to under reporting of EDI incidents and microaggressions towards staff and students on placement. Incidents are present within the general workforce of the NHS; however, the student population is at higher risk of underreporting and subsequent support as they are being graded. The supporting theory was explored and included a group discussion around barriers to reporting. This is important as reporting incidents framework highlights how this can lead to cultural change and will subsequently support staff wellbeing.
The workshop was developed to explore confidence of recognising and reporting incidents. It aimed to raise awareness, educate and engage participants in co-production of support tools to increase the likelihood of reporting and challenge organisation to creatively consider support available post incident to protect wellbeing. Outcomes of the workshops were then presented to stakeholder managerial groups to explore how support for managers could be provided to increase confidence in responding to reported incidents. Future directions of this workshop could be applicable for various staff groups including occupational therapists across the country as statistics show that there is a lack of diversity within the profession and appropriate support should be established nationally and locally.
There will be a short time for questions. This event is part of our EDB Insights series, where we’ve invited people to talk about the topics of equity, diversity and belonging, so we can all reflect and use the lessons learned in our practices.
We’re looking forward to hearing from Simone and would love for you to join us.
