How can occupational therapists help shape services, environments, products, and experiences that work for everyone?

About this online event

Join us for this EDB Insights session exploring inclusive design in practice, featuring Dr Claire Craig, occupational therapist, researcher, RCOT Fellow and Helen Hamlyn Chair for Inclusive Design at the Royal College of Art, and Savania China, inclusive design and cultural competency specialist.

Dr Claire Craig will explore the evolution of inclusive design, the principles that underpin it, and what these mean for occupational therapy practice. Drawing on examples from practice, Claire will share insights from recent work on neuro-inclusive design, including practical, co-designed resources that occupational therapists can access and use to support more inclusive approaches.

Savania China will explore how inclusive design thinking can be applied to the design of products, services, and experiences. Bringing together theory and practical application, Savania will examine the role of cultural competency in creating services that reflect and respond to the diverse communities occupational therapists work with. He will also consider how inclusive design principles can be applied within health and social care, and specifically within occupational therapy.

Together, the speakers will explore how occupational therapists can use inclusive design approaches to create more equitable services and experiences, while also influencing the development of products, equipment and environments that better meet the needs of all users.

By attending, you will:

  • Understand the key principles and evolution of inclusive design and their relevance to occupational therapy practice.
  • Explore practical inclusive design concepts, approaches and tools that can be applied immediately in your work.
  • Gain insight into how cultural competency can support the design of services and experiences that centre diverse users and communities.
  • Learn about neuro-inclusive design approaches and co-produced resources that support more inclusive practice.
  • Develop confidence to collaborate with designers, manufacturers, and service developers to advocate for more inclusive products, equipment, and environments.
  • Consider how inclusive design can contribute to more equitable and person-centred health and social care services.

Whether you work in health, social care, education, community settings or leadership roles, this session will provide practical ideas and tools to help you embed inclusive design thinking into your everyday practice.
