Comment on Education Select Committee's SEND report
'Workforce shortages and underinvestment are limiting support.’
Commenting on the Education Select Committee’s SEND report, Children and young people’s Professional Advisor at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Dr Sally Payne, said:
'We welcome the Education Select Committee’s report and its clear recognition of the urgent need for a joint SEND workforce plan across education, health, and care. As members of the SEND in the Specialists coalition, we are pleased to see the Committee echo our call for a cross-departmental approach between the Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care.
‘Occupational therapists play a vital role in supporting children and young people with SEND to participate fully in learning and everyday life. Yet, as the report highlights, workforce shortages and underinvestment are limiting the ability of professionals to deliver timely, effective support. We strongly support the Committee’s recommendation for a dedicated SEND workforce plan that addresses recruitment, retention and training across all relevant professions.
‘We also welcome the emphasis on embedding inclusive practice throughout the education system and the call for national standards for ordinarily available provision and SEND support. These are essential steps to ensure equitable access to support, reduce reliance on EHC plans and restore trust among families.
'We stand ready to work with government and partners to ensure that the specialist workforce is fully recognised, resourced and integrated into the delivery of inclusive education. We urge the Government to act swiftly on the Committee’s recommendations and to engage meaningfully with professionals, families, and young people in shaping the future of SEND provision.’
