Our comment on the UK government's youth employment drive

Occupational therapists must be embedded across education, health and employment.

Commenting on the UK government’s announcement to encourage more young people into work, Head of Policy and Practice at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Joe Brunwin, said:

‘While investment encouraging more employers to hire young people is welcome, money alone is unlikely to address the root causes of youth unemployment. Many young people struggle because they disengage from education early, have unmet neurodivergent needs or face services that don’t work together. They often require tailored support to take up or sustain jobs or apprenticeships, especially people with sensory, cognitive or mental health needs.

‘That’s why occupational therapists must be embedded across education, health and employment. They can spot needs early, give pre-work support and help young people manage their conditions and needs to get the most benefit from these schemes. Any new measures must join up with Jobcentres, primary care and CAMHS to avoid repeating the system fragmentation young people already face. They must also use evidence‑based models like Individual Placement Support and occupational therapy‑led employer support, so young people can truly thrive in work.’
