This December's issue of OTnews
We kick off this bimonthly issue by getting to know more about Gary Waltham, RCOT’s new Chief
Executive, as he prepares to join RCOT in the New Year.
In a conversation that took place in October, he reflected on the career experiences that have shaped him, the values that guide his leadership, and why he believes occupational therapy is uniquely positioned to meet today’s health and care challenges of the decade ahead.
Strong communication, shared purpose and clarity about how the organisation’s work supports its members – and ultimately patient care – are central to his ethos. Turn to pages 10-12 to read more.
Our cover feature this issue is all about Right Support, Right Time: Unlocking the Power of Occupational Therapy, our year-long campaign that aims to shift the focus from crisis-driven care to prevention-focused approaches, positioning occupational therapy at the heart of this change.
By embedding occupational therapy earlier in the places where people live, work and seek support, the campaign seeks to improve outcomes, ease pressure across services and support sustainable, preventative health, education and social care.
On pages 6 to 11, we bring you highlights of the powerful online launch event, which brought together over 350 people from within the occupational therapy community, to discuss the campaign, share insights and inspire action.
And finally, some of the questions we’re asking you to think about this issue are around outcome measures: Do you routinely use them? Are you able to make sense of the data? And does it effectively demonstrate the impact of what you do?
RCOT’s Dr Elizabeth Taylor shares what RCOT is doing to support members in this area; from what we’ve been hearing from members, why our response is to provide targeted support, not one-size-fits-all solutions, to why our position is all about building confidence and local solutions. Pages 38-41.
