Northern Ireland policy and public affairs update
May update – Community equipment and schools
Strengthening leadership in community equipment provision
Regional discussions are shaping how community equipment is assessed and provided.
This affects how decisions are made, how responsibility is shared and where occupational therapy expertise is required.
We're reinforcing OTs as leaders
We have submitted evidence to regional leaders, drawing on policy and practice from across the UK and promoting a competence-based approach.
Our briefing sets out the role of occupational therapy in safe delegation, proportionate assessment and effective workforce use. We are reinforcing occupational therapy as the profession that leads in this space.
Influencing practice in schools
A consultation on restrictive interventions in education has taken place.
This will shape how children in Northern Ireland with complex needs are supported and how restrictive practices are reduced.
Working with members
We worked with members to submit a response that emphasises trauma-informed and participation-focused approaches and the importance of reducing restrictive practices.
We have clearly set out the role of occupational therapy in supporting children, families and schools. This is a key opportunity to influence more effective and person-centred practice.
