Our comment on government reforms to the SEND system

05 December, 2024 Press release 3 minute read

It’s essential that OTs are included in SEND reforms - our comment on government reforms to the SEND system.

Commenting on a new government announcement about reforms to and investment in the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) system, children and young people’s professional advisor at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Dr Sally Payne, said:

‘The £740m investment to increase the number of places for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools in England has the potential to make a huge difference to children with additional needs. However, to ensure these funds are used effectively to support meaningful inclusion and participation, it's essential that occupational therapists are involved in identifying and implementing the relevant adaptations.

‘Our expertise in understanding how physical, cognitive, and sensory challenges affect daily activities means we are well placed to help create accessible learning environments. Involving occupational therapists in this initiative will ensure that the funding creates truly inclusive and supportive educational environments, leading to better outcomes for students with SEND.’
