Our comment on the government's WorkWell programme

By: RCOT 20 January, 2026 Press release 3 minute read

'People are getting real value from occupational therapists' involvement in WorkWell pilots.'

Commenting on the government’s announcement about its WorkWell programme, Head of Policy and Practice at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Joseph Brunwin, said:

‘WorkWell’s ambition to stop people being written off because of ill health and reduce pressure on GPs fits perfectly with occupational therapists’ strengths. Occupational therapists specialise in helping people stay well and able to participate in their everyday lives, including work. With a strong focus on prevention and early intervention, they are perfectly placed to support people before health conditions lead to prolonged absence or labour market exit.

‘We hear from occupational therapists involved in WorkWell pilots that people are getting real value from their input, particularly where support focuses early on function, routines and practical workplace adjustments. This reflects what we already know from occupational therapy evidence more widely: intervening early to address functional barriers at work and making sure people get the right support at the right time is central to helping people with health conditions stay in or return to work.

‘There are many reasons why someone might not be working and each person’s journey to employment is unique. The best support that someone looking for work can receive is tailored to their individual circumstances, which is where occupational therapists are invaluable. It’s also really important to recognise that, for some people, accessing or returning to work may not be possible. In those cases, it’s vital people have access to welfare that supports their wellbeing, dignity, and independence.’
