Representing you and our profession – October 2025

By: Your Policy & Public Affairs Leads 05 November, 2025 Blog 3 minute read

Our policy and public affairs work continues to champion occupational therapy across the UK. This month has seen important milestones in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland – from party conferences to making sure OT is firmly on the agenda in political debates and policy reforms.

Katie’s reflection:

October Update

Even though I was off for most of October, there’s still been plenty going on! Our members have been doing a fantastic job continuing to raise the profile of occupational therapy –  thank you to everyone who’s been involved.

England

Joe's reflection

October often marks a turning point in the political calendar – with party conference season in full swing, MPs returning from recess and a flurry of consultations shaping the months and years ahead. It’s a key moment for us to influence national conversations and ensure occupational therapy is front and centre in emerging policy. This month’s activity reflects that momentum, with strong engagement across workforce planning, service reform and parliamentary advocacy.

Wales

Paul Smith is our Policy and Public Affairs Lead – Wales.

Paul’s reflection

History was made in Welsh politics this month as Plaid Cymru won the Caerphilly Senedd by-election from Welsh Labour and prevented an expected win by Reform UK. The by-election has set the scene for the two parties to go head-to-head in the Senedd elections next year.

This month we submitted our consultation response to the Senedd’s education committee inquiry into the impact of the new ALN scheme on pupils and those who support them. Thank you to all the members who took part in our survey on RCOT Communities, giving us your views and having your say directly with politicians.

We also held our first member drop-in on Teams with Paul Dunning (Wales Council representative) and myself. The next drop-in will be Wednesday 14 January. Keep on eye on the Wales Network in RCOT Communities for more details.

Northern Ireland

Cliona McSherry is our Policy and Public Affairs Lead – Northern Ireland.

Cliona’s reflection:

October has been a significant month for RCOT in Northern Ireland, with several high-profile opportunities to promote the value of occupational therapy and influence key conversations.
