Revised Professional standards published for a changing world

By: RCOT 14 July, 2026 News 5 minute read

What safe, effective and ethical practice looks like for the UK occupational therapy workforce

Did you know – 75% of respondents to our member survey said our Professional Standards were a 'very valued' member benefit – with 96% saying that our Standards were valued overall.

Perhaps this is why they were downloaded over 21,300 times in 2025!

And they’ve just got better.

Go to our revised Professional Standards page

The Standards set out what safe, effective and ethical practice looks like for the UK occupational therapy workforce, wherever you work, whatever your scope and at every career level.

They describe the essential practice, behaviours and values RCOT members (and we believe all members of the occupational therapy workforce) have a responsibility to uphold, supporting high-quality, evidence-informed and inclusive practice.

We review the Standards every five years so they remain relevant to current practice and continue to provide a clear reference point for members, the public, employers, and others who need to understand the profession's expectations.

Our revised Professional standards strengthen expectations around communication, person-centred care and also professional reflection; helping you to practise with confidence and integrity in a fast moving, ever-changing health and care landscape.

What do I need to know about the update?

These standards represent your work – at all levels and across all settings. Your feedback helped us refine the final version and make sure the Standards are clear, practical and useful to your day-to-day.

The main updates include:

  • a clearer, more streamlined structure
  • closer alignment with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of conduct, performance and ethics – so the two documents can be read more easily side by side
  • stronger emphasis on equity, diversity and belonging
  • additional guidance on digital professionalism, environmental sustainability, responsible use of AI and interprofessional working
  • strengthened expectations around communication, person-centred care and professional reflection.

Why we’ve updated the Standards

Occupational therapy practice continues to evolve.

The revised Standards reflect the realities of working in a changing health and care landscape, including developments in digital practice, artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability and equity, diversity and belonging.

They also help occupational therapists and the wider occupational therapy workforce practise with confidence and integrity – supporting professional judgement and helping registered occupational therapists meet the HCPC’s registration requirements.
