Been selected for HCPC audit?

Here’s what other OTs want you to know

If you’ve been selected for HCPC audit, you’re not alone – and you’re definitely not the first.

Get support with your audit

We asked occupational therapists who’ve been through it, what advice they’d give to others. Here’s what they said.

First things first: don’t panic

It’s not as bad as it seems. Many people said they were surprised by how manageable it was once they got started. The HCPC isn’t trying to catch you out – they just want to see how you’re maintaining your professional development.

Take a breath and make a plan. Read the guidance, break the task into smaller steps and give yourself time. Starting early helps reduce stress.

Get organised and stay focused

Use the HCPC guidance and templates. They’re clear, practical and designed to help you succeed.

Start with a list. Go through each standard and jot down what evidence you already have. You might find you’ve got more than you think.

Choose quality over quantity. One strong example can often cover multiple standards. Pick pieces that show impact and relevance.

Think broadly about CPD

CPD isn’t just courses. It includes reading, podcasts, supervision, social media discussions, audits and everyday reflections. Think about what you’ve learned and how it’s shaped your practice.

If you’ve had time away from work, that’s okay. Just explain it clearly and focus on what you’ve done during the rest of the period.

Reach out and share the load

Talk to colleagues or your manager. They might have tips or examples to share, and it can be helpful to go through it together.

Ask others who’ve done it. Many people said they’d be happy to support others going through the process.

Check your tech. Make sure you upload the right file and check your spam folder for the selection email.

Final thoughts

Be kind to yourself. You’re doing your best and that’s enough.

You’ve got this. Really – you do.

This advice was gathered from a social media discussion among occupational therapists who’ve experienced the HCPC audit process. Their reflections have been curated and shaped into this guide to support others going through the same thing.
