We're concerned about the growing number of redundancies and increasing job insecurity affecting occupational therapy educators and researchers working within Higher Education Institutions. The loss of experienced occupational therapy educators and researchers not only impacts dedicated professionals but also poses a significant risk to the future of our profession.
Experienced academics are the backbone of high-quality education and research that underpin safe, effective and innovative practice. Their expertise ensures both that our graduates enter the workforce prepared to meet the complex needs of people accessing occupational therapy services and contribute to advancing evidence-based health and social care.
Reductions in academic capacity threaten the sustainability of occupational therapy programmes and limit research and innovation that drives clinical excellence, jeopardising the pipeline of skilled practitioners our health and care systems urgently need.
We call on decision-makers to recognise the long-term consequences of these cuts and to work collaboratively to safeguard the integrity and future of occupational therapy education and research. Our profession and the communities we serve cannot afford to lose this vital knowledge and leadership.
