We're helping to make sure occupational therapy is visible in key decisions across Wales – and we want you to be part of that momentum too.

Spotlight on housing

What’s happening

Occupational therapy in housing took the spotlight in Wales this month with a roundtable discussion on our report ‘Building Health into Homes’ and the Wales OT Housing group giving their insights as part of the Welsh Government project, ‘Tai ar y Cyd’.

Why this matters to you

Housing can support health, wellbeing and participation – and with the experience of OTs we can make these benefits a reality. It is estimated that poor housing costs the health and social care system £1.5 billion across the UK. Through early intervention and improving people’s living environment OTs can reduce the pressure on other services and patient health.

What we’re doing

Following the release of our report ‘Building Health into Homes’, we held a roundtable in Cardiff bringing together house builders, local authorities, housing associations, housing charities and OTs to discuss the recommendations in the report and how everyone can act on them. We’re also writing to the Welsh Government as a coalition to urge them to take action.

Through partnership working, we were introduced to the Tai ar y Cyd project, which includes social landlords, Welsh Government and builders who share a vision of delivering affordable, high-quality homes through a standardised pattern book.

The group has been asked to review the project’s plans to ensure that they are accessible for everyone and reduce the impact of making adaptions in the future.
