Rising numbers of young people falling out of education and work should concern all of us

Karin Orman, Director of Practice, Innovation and Advocacy at ROCT says:

“We welcome the Young People and Work interim report and its recognition that too many young people face inconsistent access to practical support, including occupational therapy. Rising numbers of young people falling out of education and work should concern all of us, because this is not simply an employment issue, it is a participation issue.

Occupational therapists are seeing first-hand how disrupted mental health, confidence, routines and social connections are affecting young people at a critical stage in life. When they lose opportunities to participate in education, work and their communities, the longer they remain disconnected, the harder it becomes to rebuild wellbeing and future prospects.

RCOT is clear: fragmented systems are not working. We need a preventative, joined-up approach that recognises the link between health, environment and opportunity.

Early support that focuses on participation, daily structure and meaningful activity can stop short-term setbacks becoming long-term exclusion. The priority should not be rushing young people into any job, but creating the conditions that build confidence, stability and a sense of purpose so they can access and sustain good work. Occupational therapy must be part of the solution”
