Representing you and our profession in your nation and beyond – August 2025
August brought both challenge and opportunity for occupational therapy across the UK. From influencing national policy to securing new leadership opportunities, we’ve been working hard to keep occupational therapy visible, valued and central to health and care transformation. This update captures key highlights from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales – showcasing the resilience of our members and the power of collective advocacy.

Joe’s reflection:
August was quieter with Parliament in recess, but the collapse of NRS Healthcare meant we had to respond quickly to a fast-moving and deeply concerning situation. Hearing directly from members about the impact has been sobering, but your resilience continues to inspire me. September has already picked up pace – I was in Parliament on Monday for a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Access to Disability Equipment, and pleased to be joined by RCOT member, Emma, to ensure occupational therapy is firmly on the agenda. We’re also continuing to push for progress on rehabilitation and workforce – thank you for helping us keep these issues front and centre.
We’ll keep members updated as these unfold and continue to make the case for occupational therapy.
Northern Ireland

Cliona’s reflection:
Despite it being a recess at Stormont, this has been a busy month. I met with the Department of Health’s most senior civil servant, Mike Farrar, which gave us a valuable opportunity to raise issues on behalf of the profession.
Mike has agreed to meet us on a quarterly basis – which is fantastic – so do let me know:
- what you’d say to Mike Farrar if you had the chance
- what you think he needs to know about occupational therapy in Northern Ireland
If you’d be interested in learning more or being involved in the Advisory Group in Northern Ireland –please get in touch with me to let me know at cliona.mcsherry@rcot.co.uk.
As always, thank you for your fantastic support. I am grateful to work with such an inspiring and dynamic group of members in Northern Ireland.
Looking ahead, September looks to be a busy month for us. As the Northern Ireland Assembly comes back from recess, we have some high profile meetings; with Allied Health Professions Federation Northern Ireland, attending a party political conference and engaging with colleagues at the Western Trust occupational therapy conference.
Scotland

Katie’s reflection:
The Scottish Parliament may be on recess, but we’ve been very busy throughout the summer.
Alongside council member, Neil Carnegie, and UNISON, we secured a place for OTs on the National Social Work Partnership. This is something we have long been campaigning for and a welcomed result.
We continue to develop our influencing plans and manifesto ahead of the next Scottish parliament election in 2026. I'd love to hear what you want to see included in the parties' manifestos, so please do get in touch with your ideas and insights!
Alongside colleagues from across the UK, we’ve been actively working with the Scottish Government on the news about NRS Healthcare. Please see updates below to see all our activities on this and engage with members on the RCOT Communities platform, where you can be kept up to date as things progress.
September looks to be another busy and exciting month – parliament is back, more exciting centenary celebrations and a parliamentary event. Keep updated with our activities on the RCOT Communities platform and on social media.
Wales
Paul Smith is our Policy and Public Affairs Lead – Wales.

Paul’s reflection:
The Senedd has been in recess over August with MSs out and about across Wales, many attending agricultural shows, engaging with their constituents and ramping up campaigning ahead of the Senedd elections on Thursday 7 May 2026 (a date to put in your diary ready to vote).
I’ve enjoyed getting out as well, meeting OTs in person in North Wales, seeing Carmarthenshire’s Integrated Immediate Care Service in action, checking out Swansea University’s simulation hub and getting my first RCOT consultation response under my belt.
Please do keep an eye on the Wales Network in RCOT Communities for future consultations and help to shape what we’re saying.
