Which type of membership is right for you?

Professional membership

£24.17 per month

You hold an occupational therapy qualification recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) AND are either registered with the HCPC or eligible for registration with the HCPC AND are resident in the UK.

New Professional members receive 25% off their fees for the first year.

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

Note: For students transitioning from a student member to a discounted professional member it is important that you continue to have access to the range of resources that can support your practice once you qualify.  The easiest way to do that is by retaining your membership to RCOT. For graduates your membership will automatically roll over onto a discounted professional member at the end of the membership year. We will contact you regarding the upgrade of your membership before the membership year ends.

However, if you are employed in an occupational therapy role prior to the end of the membership year, you should upgrade your membership to discounted professional member status to coincide with the start date of your employment to ensure that you have UNISON support.

Student membership

£5.00 per month

You are enrolled on an occupational therapy pre-registration programme at a higher education institution (HEI) in the UK, OR are studying a Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) recognised support worker qualification (with a RCOT student membership option).

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - for periods of practice placement in the UK and overseas (excluding USA/Canada) however students MUST be working under the supervision of a qualified occupational therapist for this insurance policy to be available to them. Find out more about the professional indemnity policy.
  • UNISON membership - provides cover for students only while engaged in activities associated with their studies which includes access to products and resources but excludes casework support.  Students who experience issues whilst on practice placement should seek assistance from the university practice placement co-ordinator.

Note 1: Students who work part -time whilst studying and who work in health or social care sectors may require access (or continued access) to industrial relation cover. In this situation, part- time students can join RCOT as an associate member instead of student membership.  Associate membership will provide all the student membership benefits plus access to UNISON support. However if the preference is to remain paying just student membership it should be noted that UNISON support for work related matters is not part of the student benefits package.

Note 2: Students at post-registration level are not eligible for the RCOT student membership category.

Join RCOT as a Student Member online

Setting up your RCOT student membership is quick and simple - it will take you around 10 minutes to complete. Even if you do not need to pay for your membership - you still need to activate your membership to access the resources.

Associate membership

£14.16 per month

New associate members receive 25% off their fees for the first year.

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

Note 1:  If you hold an occupational therapy qualification and are eligible for registration with the HCPC then you are only eligible for professional membership of RCOT, not associate membership, even if you are working in a support role.

Note 2: Students who work part -time whilst studying and who work in health or social care sectors may require access (or continued access) to industrial relation cover. In this situation, part- time students can join RCOT as an associate member instead of student membership. Associate membership will provide all the student membership benefits plus access to UNISON support.

However if the preference is to remain paying just student membership it should be noted that UNISON support for work related matters is not part of the student benefits package.

Self-Employed membership

£18.13 per month

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • RCOT professional indemnity cover is for all members, whether employed or self employed, but NOT their employer. The policy does not provide cover for any type of company or a partnership. If cover is required for any type of company or partnership a separate policy will need to be arranged in the name of that entity. Find out more about the professional indemnity policy.
  • UNISON membership is not included in this category of RCOT membership.

Overseas membership

£18.13 per month

As above for professional membership, but you must be resident outside the UK – including living in the Channel Islands.

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - limited depending on the location of the claim. Caveat: the cover is worldwide (excl. USA and Canada). Any claim must be brought under EU, Channel Islands or Australian jurisdiction. Find out more about the professional indemnity policy.
  • UNISON membership is not included in this category of RCOT membership.

Note 1: Those living in Northern Ireland and working in the Republic of Ireland are not resident outside the UK so should be professional members. However, they cannot be provided with legal assistance in their workplace.

Note 2: Those living in the Republic of Ireland and working in Northern Ireland and requiring industrial relations support should select professional membership and use their work address as their primary address otherwise select overseas membership.

Note 3: Those who have qualified overseas must have completed an entry level educational programme that has been WFOT approved to be eligible for membership under this category.

Career break member

£16.50 per month

Only available to existing RCOT professional members of at least 12 months standing, taking a career break (e.g. maternity/paternity leave, carers leave or due to unemployment) for a maximum period of 12 months.

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

Note 1: This option is not recommended to RCOT pre-registration student members who should move to the 25% discounted rate for new professional members for their first year post-qualification and use the career break option as and when it may be required after that to maximise the subscription saving available to them.

Note 2: Occupational therapists who are not in work and wishing to return to practice following a break and in the process of applying for registration with HCPC can join under this category. However those who are in paid employment and wishing to return to practice and going through HCPC requirements could join as a professional member.

Retired member

Professional indemnity and UNISON cover:

  • Professional indemnity cover - £6m cover for each member on a claims occurring basis. Find out more about the professional indemnity policy.
  • UNISON membership is not included for this category of RCOT membership.
