Our comment on funding for SEND in mainstream schools

By: RCOT 12 December, 2025 Press release 3 minute read

Investing in opportunities for children with SEND and stronger partnerships across education, health and families.

Commenting on the government’s announcement for additional funding for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools, Joseph Brunwin, Head of Policy and Practice at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, said:

'Investing in inclusive education means more opportunities for children with SEND and stronger partnerships across education, health and families. It will support schools to create classrooms where every pupil can thrive, not just those with special educational needs and disabilities.

‘However, expanded provision won’t benefit children unless there’s an increase in specialists to support them - and occupational therapists need to be involved in the planning to make sure the funding is spent in the right way.

‘We want to see every school have access to a local occupational therapist. Occupational therapists play a vital role in supporting children with SEND to thrive in mainstream education. They work with children and their families on an individual basis, as well as working with schools to support teachers and other staff to provide support that can benefit all pupils.

‘We look forward to continuing to work with the government and support schools in creating environments where every child can participate, learn and realise their full potential.’
