Parliament has been in recess over the summer, so formal parliamentary activity has been quieter. However, our influencing work has continued, with a focus on sharing evidence, building relationships and making sure occupational therapy is visible in key policy discussions ahead of a busy autumn.
Milburn Review on young people who are NEET
The Milburn Review is looking at why so many young people are not in education, employment or training (NEET), and what needs to change across health, education, welfare and employment support.
Its interim report highlighted the scale of the challenge, with nearly one million young people aged 16 to 24 currently not earning or learning, and called for a system-wide response to prevent more young people becoming detached from work, education and training.
Why this matters to you
Occupational therapists have a vital role in supporting young people’s participation, mental and physical health and transitions into adulthood. The review creates an important opportunity to show how occupational therapy can help young people overcome barriers to education, training and work, particularly where health, disability, confidence, routines or life skills are affecting participation.

What we’re doing
We’ve shared evidence with the review and joined working groups to make sure occupational therapy is part of the conversation. We’re highlighting the role occupational therapists can play in early support, transitions, mental health, skills for daily life and routes into education, training and employment.
We’ll continue to engage as the review develops and look for opportunities to influence its recommendations.
