OT Week 2026: Participation Changes Everything
Participation Changes Everything is the focus for OT Week 2026 and the first step in a wider ambition to strengthen the profile of occupational therapy, influence the future of support and make the case for occupational therapy as part of the solution to some of society's biggest challenges.
It marks the beginning of a wider journey to raise the profile of occupational therapy, strengthen the profession's influence and build momentum for future influencing work, including a major new campaign launching in the new year.
Why this matter now
Across the UK, there is growing recognition that support should work around people's lives, not the other way round. As governments and system leaders focus more on prevention, participation and person-centred support, occupational therapy has an essential role to play.
Participation is fundamental to health, wellbeing and quality of life. It means being able to take part in the activities that matter to us, including learning, working, caring for family, connecting with others, enjoying hobbies and contributing to our communities. These opportunities to participate shape how people live, connect and thrive throughout their lives. Evidence suggests that participation is one of the strongest influences on health and wellbeing, making it central to helping people live well. (See references)
Occupational therapists are the experts in participation. Through occupations, people participate in family life, education, work, leisure and society, making occupational therapy essential to helping people achieve the outcomes that matter to them.
If we want a future where more people can learn, work and participate throughout their lives, occupational therapy must be part of the solution.
Responding to what members have told us
Members have told us they want RCOT to do more to raise the profile of occupational therapy, strengthen our influence and lead change on the issues that matter most.
Participation Changes Everything is the first step in responding to that ambition.
Through OT Week, we'll come together to showcase the impact of occupational therapy, strengthen the profile of the profession and position occupational therapists as experts in participation and prevention.
By highlighting the importance of participation and the role occupational therapists play in enabling it, we'll build awareness, engagement and momentum for the work ahead.
Looking ahead
OT Week is the first step in a wider journey.
In the new year, RCOT will launch a major new campaign that builds on the momentum created through Participation Changes Everything, influencing the changes needed so more people can access the support they need to learn, work and participate throughout their lives.
During OT Week and in the months that follow, we'll share more about the campaign and how members can get involved.
