Scotland 2026: Six steps to a healthier nation
Why occupational therapy matters in Scotland
Occupational therapists are a vital part of Scotland’s health and social care system. Around 4,000 practitioners work across communities and services, helping people live healthier, more independent lives.
But demand is rising. More people are living longer with long-term conditions, almost four in ten adults face health challenges that limit daily life, and life expectancy remains lower than many parts of the UK and Western Europe. At every stage – from premature babies to older adults – occupational therapists help people stay well, overcome challenges and take part in everyday life.
Strengthening occupational therapy in communities and primary care will help Scotland prevent crisis, reduce pressure on hospitals and support better outcomes for everyone.
The difference occupational therapy makes
Across Scotland, occupational therapists help people stay well, avoid crisis and live independently. The impact is clear:
Preventing long term social care: 40% of people completing reablement no longer need homecare; 20% need reduced support.
Early support: A whole-school OT model cut requests by 85%.
Reducing hospital pressure: Therapy-led discharge saved 1,100 bed days in five weeks.
Better value: 100% of employees in work at referral stayed in work after OT support.
