About the online event

This session will help you refresh why supervision is essential to your professional growth.

This session will:

· Help you refresh why supervision is essential to your professional growth

· Look at the different ways independent occupational therapists can access supervision support, both informal and formal

· How to advocate to employers (non-health backgrounds) why supervision is essential

· Explore professional identity when stepping beyond statutory services and/or a traditional occupational therapy role, and how supervision can support this

· Protecting your well-being when you wear many hats as a therapist, leader, business owner, accountant, marketer…in the world of independent practice. What role does supervision play in this?

Lynsay McFarlane-Shaw will guide you through the process during this 3 hour session, which is online and will include interaction and participation, with polls, a chat box, and breakout room

Lynsay McFarlane-Shaw

With over 30 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist, Lynsay McFarlane-Shaw is regarded as an advocate for supervision in occupational therapy. After dedicating 20 years to the NHS, Lynsay transitioned into independent practice, founding her own OT business to support children, young people, and families in school and community settings. Her OT business now also provides professional supervision and supervision training.

Lynsay’s passion for professional occupational therapy supervision is clear; she has become a key figure supporting therapists in both in- and outside-statutory healthcare roles. Recognising the critical role of supervision in job satisfaction, retention, and well-being, she provides tailored supervision to meet the unique needs of therapists across diverse practice settings, including sole practitioners, emerging roles, and occupational therapy business leaders.

In 2024, Lynsay presented her innovative Long Arm Occupational Therapy Supervision Model at the Royal College of Occupational Therapy’s Children, Young People, and Families conference, sparking widespread interest. In November 2025, she presented at the OT Show, highlighting the role of OT supervision in promoting well-being and preventing burnout. This was also shared in April 2026 on a CPDme webinar. She continues to advocate for the importance of supervision through podcasts, social media, and efforts to publish her model.

Lynsay’s reputation as an OT supervisor is built on her dedication to empowering therapists through accessible, high-quality, person-centred supervision. She also provides her ‘Basics to Brilliance Supervision Skills Training’ online for occupational therapists and healthcare professionals. She is advancing her mission to elevate professional standards around supervision and promote the well-being of therapists across the UK and beyond.
