This webinar aims to support all OTs to confidently engage in fit note conversations, as well as know what a fit note is and how to use it.

About the event

Work is a fundamental occupation that supports health, identity and participation. When health affects work, occupational therapists are uniquely placed to bridge the gap between clinical care and meaningful vocational outcomes. This webinar explores the role of occupational therapists in fit note completion and wider health and work conversations, positioning this as a natural extension of core OT practice rather than an add-on.

Drawing on occupational therapy’s strengths in functional assessment, activity analysis and person-centred vocational rehabilitation, the session builds confidence in communicating work-related functional information clearly and effectively. It covers the purpose, legal context and practical use of fit notes and the AHP Health and Work Report, alongside real-world examples from practice. Participants are supported to recognise their professional legitimacy in this space and to take practical steps to use fit notes to enable people to remain in, return to, or thrive in work.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise and articulate the unique role of occupational therapy in fit note completion and wider health and work conversations, grounded in core OT values and skills.
  • Understand the purpose, context and legal framework of the fit note and the Allied Health Professional (AHP) Health and Work Report, including when and how each should be used.
  • Communicate work-related functional information clearly and confidently, supporting constructive conversations with individuals, employers and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Apply core occupational therapy skills, including functional assessment, activity analysis and vocational rehabilitation, to support fit note decisions that enable participation, recovery and return to work.
