About the online event

Work is not a niche clinical specialty or an "add-on" to our OT focus. It is an essential, everyday occupation that, for many, fundamentally underpins health, identity, and personal wellbeing, while proactively reducing socio-economic health inequalities. It’s deeply linked to occupational justice.

This webinar is the second instalment of a vital three-part series designed to empower the entire occupational therapy workforce.

Delivered by Monique Smith, Vocational rehabilitation occupational therapist. The webinar will focus on exploring the vocational ladder, clinical interventions that can be used to address the disparities between work and health. The webinar will explore and occupational therapy interventions that can be applied across any discipline and identify resources to support work and health interventions. It does not require any specific designation of occupational therapy it is open to all occupational therapists. As occupational therapists we are well positioned to approach the “The Work Question” and consider the disparities across unemployed populations. Some of whom may have health conditions and disabilities, which are likely to be a barrier to engagement in work and vocational activities. The learning session will address how occupational therapists can support this population and how we can effectively work together to bridge the gap.

Who is it for?

  • All occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and pre-registration students.

  • If you work in ANY area of practice, even if you find yourself thinking, "Work isn't my area," this session is explicitly for you.

Why you must attend:

The webinar focuses on building the confidence, understanding, and clinical rationale required for every occupational therapist (regardless of their band, setting, or specialism!) to routinely ask "The Work Question" and know what to do with the answer.

We will break down why work falls squarely within your distinct clinical scope, explore how our holistic foundations perfectly position us to lead the national work and health agenda, and share simple, immediate ways to embed work conversations into your routine practice.

  • Own your professional space: The UK healthcare landscape is rapidly shifting toward occupational health, prevention, and community rehabilitation. OTs are uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between healthcare and employment, and we are confidently inhabiting this space.

  • Translate your existing skills: You already analyse environments, assess activity, and negotiate adaptations. We will show you how to effortlessly pivot those exact skills toward work outcomes without adding to your workload.

  • Champion occupational justice: Enabling an individual to stay in, return to, or seek meaningful work is one of the most powerful interventions we have to prevent poverty and promote long-term health equity.
