Updates from our Policy and Practice Team – January 2026
Momentum is shifting from plans to delivery across the UK – with clear implications for occupational therapy in early years, schools, community health and social care.
This month we spotlight the first 1,000 days report and early intervention, progress on the Right to Rehab campaign and the upcoming elections in Scotland and Wales. We also unpack what current and upcoming budgets could mean for services, rehabilitation and you. Scroll to your nation for key dates, consultations and simple ways to add your voice.

In 2026, the UK Government’s attention will increasingly turn from vision-setting to delivery – following the publication of its 10 Year Health Plan. Key policy areas to watch include:
- reforms to SEND
- social care
- support for people to stay in or return to work.
For us, 2026 is all about how policy translates into real-world practice.
We’ll be engaging in the planning of SEND reforms, social care reform and the development of more joined-up, preventative health and community services – all areas where occupational therapists’ expertise is essential.
Scotland

With less than 100 days to go until the election, and a busy period of policy and member engagement underway, there’s a lot happening across Scotland. Below is a snapshot of what we’ve been focused on this month.
As always, thank you for your continued engagement and support as we represent you and champion occupational therapy across Scotland.
Wales/Cymru

There are fewer than 100 days until the Senedd elections on Thursday 7 May. Looking at the polls, there is likely to be a significant change in how Wales is run. It's essential that you have your say.
Voting is an occupation. We’ll be updating the guidance written by occupational therapists supporting people who may have difficulties voting – making sure that we continue to lift up their everyday by enabling them to vote confidently.
You can support the people you are working with to prepare. The key message is to plan early. If someone can’t vote in person, help them sign up to postal vote. They can register online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote
Northern Ireland

With a draft multi‑year budget now out for consultation until Tuesday 3 March 2026, and renewed momentum behind Right to Rehab, it’s a pivotal month for occupational therapy in Northern Ireland. We’re shaping our response on funding priorities, engaging MLAs ahead of next year’s Assembly election and showcasing practice during the Chair and CEO’s visit.
