Royal College of Occupation Therapists
Background
Mental health problems are common during pregnancy and in the two years following birth, affecting around 1 in 10 women. Perinatal mental illness affects not just the mother, but can also impact on the emotional, cognitive and physical development of the child. The consequences can be life-long and impact on the whole family.
Recent (and welcome) investment into perinatal mental heatlh services (NHS England, 2018) has increased the number of occupational therapy posts in Mother and Baby Units and perinatal mental health community teams.
The Royal College of Occupational Therapists is keen to gather intelligence and support occupational therapy services working in perinatal mental health settings across the UK. With keynote speakers from occupational therapists, this networking event offers an opportunity for professional RCOT members to come together to discuss:
- The role of occupational therapists in perinatal mental health services - in community teams and Mother and Baby Units;
- Therapists’ training and support needs in this growing area of practice;
- Demonstrating the impact and effectiveness of occupational therapy.
Learning Objectives:
- Consider strengths, opportunities and challenges for occupational therapists working in perinatal mental health;
- Explore learning needs for therapists working in perinatal mental health;
- Discuss how we can measure the impact and effectiveness of occupational therapy;
- Identify the next steps for sharing best practice and providing peer support.
Outline Programme:
The structure to the day is designed to be flexible. It will consist of presentations and group discussions which will be captured to share after the event.
