Why we need to strengthen our governance
Strengthening our governance to deliver greater impact
We have big ambitions for the profession, which we’ve set out in our strategy. Having listened to our members, we’re doing more to raise the profile of the profession. We’re getting people to see occupational therapy as the solution to their needs, and improving our member offerings to support you throughout your career. To do that, we’re building up our organisation so we can deliver the greatest impact for our members and the wider profession.
One of the ways we’re going to do that is by strengthening our governance so we can be a more effective, responsive, focused and efficient organisation.
Why do we need to change?
We have really ambitious plans for the profession and to achieve that we need our governance to be effective so that we are a more responsive, focused and efficient organisation, able to deliver the greatest impact for our members and the wider profession.
Our governance has evolved over many years, and in that time, we’ve also grown and changed. Some aspects of it are out-of-date and more complicated than needed. In some places, we’re not as compliant as we should be. That’s why we’ve started to review our governance, so we can make sure it’s fit for purpose both today and in the future. Essentially, we need to do this to safeguard our future.
If we don’t change now, we’re at risk of not making the best decisions and having regulatory intervention.
How will this benefits members?
By making these changes, you can be confident that your membership body is fit for purpose and following good practice. You can be reassured that we’re legally compliant with the risk of regulatory intervention significantly reduced. You can trust that informed decisions will be made by a majority of elected occupational therapists, working together with individuals who will each have experience in additional and specific subject matters.
